FortiWiFi 30G vs FortiWiFi 50G

Of the 57 specifications Fortinet publishes across these two models, 38 differ. The differences are listed first, then what the step up actually buys and which model fits which site, then every row side by side.

Which one fits

Stepping up from the FortiWiFi 30G to the FortiWiFi 50G moves threat-protection throughput from 500 Mbps to 1.1 Gbps (2.2×), IPS throughput from 800 Mbps to 2.25 Gbps (2.8×) and NGFW throughput from 570 Mbps to 1.25 Gbps (2.2×). Neither choice moves the site-to-site tunnel count (both 200) or packet-per-second forwarding (5.85 Mpps against 6 Mpps), so a site held back by how many branches terminate on it gains nothing from the FWF-50G-A.

Choose the FortiWiFi 30G if

  • Threat-protection throughput is already enough at 500 Mbps: the FWF-50G-A adds 2.2× you will not use.
  • Your limit is how many branches terminate on it, which the step up does not move: 200 against 200.

Choose the FortiWiFi 50G if

  • Threat-protection throughput has to go past 500 Mbps: the FWF-50G-A publishes 1.1 Gbps.
  • IPS throughput has to go past 800 Mbps: the FWF-50G-A publishes 2.25 Gbps.
  • NGFW throughput has to go past 570 Mbps: the FWF-50G-A publishes 1.25 Gbps.
  • Only the FWF-50G-A has Bluetooth Low Energy.

19 of the 57 published rows are identical — Trusted Platform Module at Yes, Firewall Policies at 2,000, Gateway-to-Gateway IPsec VPN Tunnels at 200 and Client-to-Gateway IPsec VPN Tunnels at 250 among them — so the choice does not touch any of those.
