Cellular modules are sold for a carrier region. The -AM variants are the North American ones; confirm the region code matches the carrier before ordering.
Throughput figures quoted for a modem module are the module maximums and depend on carrier network, band and signal conditions.
Region-specific power adapters are ordered separately on several models.
Specifications are as published by Fortinet and may change without notice. Confirm the current revision before ordering.
FortiExtender 511G-WiFi
The 511G with Wi-Fi built in — 5G Sub-6GHz backhaul and local wireless from one box, for a site that needs both without a separate access point.
Wireless WAN, managed from the FortiGate
FortiExtender puts a cellular WAN link under the same management as the rest of the Fortinet estate. It terminates on the FortiGate, so the link becomes another WAN interface available to SD-WAN policy rather than a separate connection with its own console. That matters most where wired circuits are slow to provision, unreliable, or simply absent — branch openings, temporary sites, failover for a single-circuit office, and vehicles or OT assets that move.
What the FortiExtender 511G-WiFi is
FortiExtender-511G-WIFI Indoor Broadband Wireless WAN Router with 1x "Dual SIM 5G Sub-6GHz M.2 Module" + 1x reserved eSIM for NA/EU/APAC Carriers. It can be powered either by PoE 802.3at (25.5W) or optional DC 12V/2A power adapter. Region Code A
Carrier region matters
Cellular modules are built and certified for a carrier region, and the region is part of the part number — the -AM variants are the North American ones. A unit ordered for the wrong region will not attach to a Canadian carrier, so the region code is worth confirming before the order goes in rather than after. Several models also take a region-specific power adapter that is ordered separately.
