All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites, and the SSL-VPN figure uses an RSA-2048 certificate.
The datasheet gives the onboard storage as 2 x 480 GB and the vendor catalogue as 960 GB. They are the same capacity described two ways.
Every throughput, session and VPN figure is shared with the FortiGate 1000F. The storage, the weight and the power draw are the differences.
Two SFP SX transceivers are included with the appliance. Any other optics, QSFP28 modules and direct attach cables are quoted separately.

The 1000F, Keeping Its Own Logs
Every throughput, session and VPN figure on this page is identical to the FortiGate 1000F. What the 1001F adds is 960 GB of onboard SSD, so the appliance holds its own log history instead of depending on a reachable FortiAnalyzer. For a data centre unit that is often the difference between investigating an incident and waiting for someone to restore a log server.
Thirty-Five Interfaces in Two Rack Units
Eight 10 GE RJ45 slots that step down to 100M, sixteen 10 GE SFP+, eight 25 GE SFP28 and two 100 GE QSFP28, plus a dedicated management port and a 2.5 GE HA port, with a TPM on board for key storage.
NP7 and CP9, Two Rack Units
The throughput comes from Fortinet’s own silicon rather than a larger CPU: NP7 network processors handle session setup and forwarding inline, and the CP9 content processor takes the SSL and pattern-matching load off the main cores. That is what fits this capacity into 2 RU on 408 W at maximum draw, with two hot-swappable supplies fitted by default.
