IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites.
Fortinet’s specification table calls the fitted drives 2 x 2 TB SSD while the ordering information on the same datasheet calls them 2 x 1.92 TB - the same pair of drives, described by class in one place and by usable capacity in the other. We confirm the fitted capacity at quote.
The AC variants take 100-240 V. Fortinet also builds 4800F-DC and 4801F-DC for a rack fed from a 48-60 V plant, and both are listed here with their own part numbers.
The 280 million concurrent sessions and 915,000 new sessions a second are the figures without the hyperscale licence. LIC-FG48F-HYPSC raises them to 1.8 billion and 25 million by moving session setup, session logging and NAT into the NP7.
Two 10 GE SFP+ SR transceivers are included with the appliance. Any other optics, QSFP-DD and QSFP56 modules and direct attach cables are quoted separately.
The four variants on this datasheet - AC or DC power, with or without internal storage - share every performance figure. Only the storage, the weight, the power draw and the input differ.
The maximum operating temperature derates by 1.5°C for every 1,000 ft above 7,400 ft, so a high-altitude site needs the airflow checked.

FortiGate 4801F
The FortiGate 4800F with two SSDs fitted - the same 3.1 Tbps, keeping its own log history.
Eight 400 GE Slots and 3.1 Tbps of Firewall
The 4800F is the fastest rackmount firewall Fortinet builds: eight 400 GE QSFP-DD slots, 3.1 Tbps of firewall throughput and 1,396 million packets a second. Eight hundred Gbps of IPsec VPN is more than two and a half times what the 4400F does, which is the reason this platform exists.
Where It Differs From the 4400F
Raw throughput is roughly three times the 4400F, but inspected throughput is not - eighty-seven Gbps of IPS against ninety-four, and sixty-three Gbps of SSL inspection against eighty-six. The 4800F is built for volume and for terminating very large encrypted tunnels, not for deeper inspection; if inspection is the binding constraint, the 4400F is the better-matched box.
What the Hyperscale Licence Buys
LIC-FG48F-HYPSC is perpetual rather than a subscription. It moves hardware session setup, firewall session logging and NAT into the NP7, taking two hundred and eighty million concurrent sessions to one point eight billion and 915,000 new sessions a second to twenty-five million. Two drives are fitted on this model, so the unit keeps its own log history rather than depending on a reachable FortiAnalyzer.
