All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. Every model in the 400F series shares the same throughput, session and VPN figures - storage and the power input are what differ.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites, and the SSL-VPN figure uses an RSA-2048 certificate.
The 2.5 microsecond latency figure applies to the four ultra low latency SFP+ ports only. The other interfaces run at 4.19 microseconds.
Two SFP SX 1 GE transceivers are included with the appliance. Any other optics and direct attach cables are quoted separately.
Unlike the 120G and 200G, the power supplies in this series are hot swappable.

NP7 and CP9 at 80 Gbps
The FortiGate 400F series is where the NP7 network processor and the CP9 content processor arrive: 79.5 Gbps of firewall throughput, 55 Gbps of IPsec VPN and 12 Gbps of IPS from a 1 RU chassis. Four of its twelve SFP+ slots are ultra low latency ports that cut forwarding latency from 4.19 to 2.5 microseconds, which matters for trading, voice and industrial control traffic.
Built for a Campus Core or a Data Centre Edge
Thirty-two interfaces, 7.8 million concurrent sessions and 50,000 client VPN tunnels put the 400F well beyond branch duty - it is a campus core, an internal segmentation firewall or a data centre boundary. Two SFP SX transceivers are included, the dual power supplies are hot swappable, and it manages up to 72 FortiSwitches and 512 FortiAPs from FortiOS.
