All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. The 600E and 601E share every throughput, session and VPN figure - the SSDs and the weight are the differences.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites.
The redundant power supply on this series is optional, not fitted by default. It is hot swappable when fitted. The G-series models above ship with dual supplies as standard.
This is an NP6 and CP9 platform. The 400G and 700G use NP7 and CP10 and are substantially faster; if this is a new build rather than a match to an existing estate, compare them first.
Two SFP SX 1 GE transceivers are included with the appliance. Any other optics are quoted separately.
FortiCare Essentials is not offered on this platform - Fortinet restricts that tier to desktop models.

What the 601E Adds
The 601E is the 600E with two 240 GB SSDs fitted, 480 GB in total, so the appliance holds its own log history rather than depending on the path to FortiAnalyzer. Throughput, interfaces and session capacity are identical to the 600E - the unit is half a kilo heavier and that is the only other difference.
An NP6 Platform Still Carrying Real Load
The FortiGate 600E is the previous generation of Fortinet silicon - NP6 and CP9 rather than NP7 - and it still delivers 36 Gbps of firewall throughput, 8 million concurrent sessions and 20 Gbps of IPsec VPN. It is the practical choice when an existing 600-class deployment is being extended or matched rather than replaced, and it carries ICSA Labs certification for firewall, IPsec, IPS, antivirus and SSL-VPN.
Where It Differs from the Current Range
Two things set it apart from the G-series boxes above it. Its redundant power supply is optional rather than fitted by default, so a deployment that needs dual feed has to specify it. And it supports 10 virtual domains with no expansion, where the 400G and 700G run to 50. Worth checking both against the deployment before specifying it.
