All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. The 700G and 701G share every throughput, session and VPN figure - the SSDs and the power draw are the differences.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites.
Fortinet publishes 16 million concurrent sessions for the 700G and 28 million for the 400G, while giving the 700G the higher inspection throughput on every other measure. The two are not a simple hierarchy - match the model to whether session count or inspection rate is the constraint.
The power supplies are fitted by default and are not hot-swappable. They give 1+1 redundancy, not field-replaceable modules.
Two SFP SX transceivers are included with the appliance. Any other optics and direct attach cables are quoted separately.
FortiCare Essentials is not offered on this platform - Fortinet restricts that tier to desktop models.

The FortiGate 700G with two 480 GB SSDs fitted - the fastest inspection engine, with the storage to log it.
What the 701G Adds
The 701G is the 700G with two 480 GB SSDs fitted, 960 GB in total. At 700,000 new sessions a second and 1.6 million inspected SSL sessions, this appliance generates log volume at a rate that makes local storage worth having - it keeps real history on the box rather than depending on the path to FortiAnalyzer staying up. Throughput, interfaces and session capacity are identical to the 700G.
The Inspection Engine of the Range
The FortiGate 700G shares the 400G chassis and its 34 interfaces, but roughly half again the inspection capacity: 38 Gbps of IPS against 25, 29 Gbps NGFW against 14, and 26 Gbps of threat protection against 13. SSL inspection runs to 14 Gbps across 1.6 million sessions, and 10,000 concurrent SSL-VPN users is double what the 400G supports.
Chassis Identical, Workload Different
Dimensions, weight, power draw, cooling and the 45 C ambient rating are the same as the 400G - these two models are the same box with different silicon budgets. Choose between them on what the traffic needs: the 400G holds more concurrent sessions, the 700G inspects them faster. Both carry NP7 and CP10, 50 virtual domains and two SFP SX transceivers in the box.
