All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. Every model in the 80F series shares the same throughput, session and VPN figures.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites.
The two RJ45/SFP pairs are shared media: use the copper port or the SFP cage of a pair, not both. SFP transceivers are quoted separately - FN-TRAN-GC (RJ45), FN-TRAN-SX, FN-TRAN-LX and FR-TRAN-ZX for 90 km.

What the 81F Adds
The 81F is the 80F with a 128 GB SSD fitted. That storage lets the appliance keep logs locally rather than shipping every event off-box - useful when the WAN is the thing you are troubleshooting, when a retention requirement has to be met on site, or when FortiAnalyzer is not part of the deployment. Throughput, ports and session capacity are identical to the 80F.
Converged Next-Generation Firewall and SD-WAN
The FortiGate 80F series integrates firewalling, SD-WAN, network controller and security in one appliance, built for a branch that needs real session capacity. At 1.5 million concurrent sessions and 2,500 client VPN tunnels it carries far more remote users than the smaller desktop platforms, and the two shared-media RJ45/SFP WAN pairs let the uplinks be copper or fibre.
Built on the Fortinet Security Fabric
As a cornerstone of the Fortinet Security Fabric, the FortiGate NGFW works with FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services to deliver coordinated, automated threat protection in real time. The 80F manages up to 24 FortiSwitches and 96 FortiAPs, takes a second DC adapter for power redundancy, and is administered centrally from FortiManager.
