All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. The 900G and 901G share every throughput, session and VPN figure - the SSDs and the power draw are the differences.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites, and the SSL-VPN figure uses an RSA-2048 certificate.
The 2.5 microsecond latency figure applies to the four ultra low latency SFP28 slots only. The other interfaces run at 3.78 microseconds.
The datasheet gives the height as 1.5 inches alongside 44.45 mm, which are not the same measurement - 44.45 mm is 1.75 inches, and that matches the 1 RU form factor. We have given the millimetre figure and flagged the discrepancy rather than pick one silently.
The power supplies are hot swappable and two ship by default, unlike the 400G and 700G where they are not field-replaceable.
Fortinet also lists DC-powered 900G-DC and 901G-DC variants on the same datasheet, for a rack fed from a 48-60 V plant. Ask us if you need one.
Two SFP SX transceivers are included with the appliance. Any other optics and direct attach cables are quoted separately.
FortiCare Essentials is not offered on this platform - Fortinet restricts that tier to desktop models.

The FortiGate 900G is the largest appliance on this site: 26 Gbps of IPS, 74.8 Gbps of application control and 16.7 Gbps of SSL inspection across 1.6 million inspected sessions. Twenty-nine interfaces including four 25 GE SFP28 ultra low latency slots, 2,048 managed FortiAPs and 10 Gbps of SSL-VPN for up to 10,000 concurrent users put it firmly in data centre and large campus territory.
Hot-Swappable Power and Ultra Low Latency Ports
Unlike the 400G and 700G, this series ships with two hot-swappable power supplies - a failed unit is replaced without taking the appliance down, and DC variants are available for a 48-60 V plant. The four 25 GE SFP28 slots are ultra low latency ports, cutting forwarding latency from 3.78 to 2.5 microseconds for traffic that cannot tolerate the difference.
