All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. The FortiGate 90G and 91G share every throughput, session and VPN figure - the SSD and the power draw are the differences.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites, and the SSL-VPN figure uses an RSA-2048 certificate.
The two WAN pairs are shared media and run at 10/5/2.5/1 GE on copper or 10GE/GE on SFP+/SFP: use the copper port or the cage of a pair, not both. Transceivers are quoted separately.

What the 91G Adds
The 91G is the 90G with a 120 GB SSD fitted, so the appliance keeps its own logs rather than shipping every event off-box. It is also the one model in the range Fortinet sells as a subscription: FortiGate-as-a-Service covers the appliance, the bandwidth and the public IPs for a term, as a single unit or an HA pair, instead of a capital purchase.
Converged Next-Generation Firewall and SD-WAN
The FortiGate 90G series is the top of the desktop range and the first with 10 GE uplinks: two shared-media WAN pairs that run 10/5/2.5/1 GE on copper or 10GE/GE on SFP+. At 28 Gbps of firewall throughput, 25 Gbps of IPsec VPN and 4.5 Gbps of IPS it carries a large branch or a small head office without moving to a rackmount chassis.

As a cornerstone of the Fortinet Security Fabric, the FortiGate NGFW works with FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services to deliver coordinated, automated threat protection in real time.
