Eight Ports in a Cabinet

The 108F is the rugged switch for a small cabinet that needs a handful of ports and nothing else - a pumping station, a signalling box, a remote enclosure with a camera and a PLC. Two SFP ports let the uplink run on fibre, which in an electrically noisy environment is usually the right choice regardless of distance.

Built for Places a Rack Switch Cannot Go

The Rugged series trades port count and capacity for survivability: fanless cooling, DIN-rail or rack mounting, redundant DC input terminals rather than an AC cord, and an operating range that runs well below freezing. Substations, trackside cabinets, water treatment plants, mines and outdoor enclosures are the deployments - places where an ordinary switch fails on temperature, vibration or dust long before it fails on throughput.

Managed as an Extension of the Firewall

A FortiSwitch can run standalone, but the reason to buy one alongside a FortiGate is FortiLink: the switch becomes a logical extension of the firewall, so ports, VLANs and network access control are configured in the same console as the security policy. That removes the usual split between the team that owns the switch and the team that owns the firewall, and it is why NAC on these switches costs nothing extra.
