Specifications are from Fortinet’s September 2026 FortiAP High Density series datasheet.
The High Density range is the exception to the rest of FortiAP: it runs under the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, licensed per site as LIC-WMS-HD-SW. That licence is listed below and is needed in addition to the access points.
This is the right-beam variant. The FortiAP HD-224KL is the mirrored equivalent and they are usually specified in pairs.
Fortinet’s ordering description reads "Two radio 4x4 streams" while the comparison table gives four total streams for this model. We have followed the comparison table.
Fortinet’s ordering table lists this model without a region suffix, while our catalogue source lists it with -A. We confirm the exact part number at quote.
FortiCare Essential is sold as a renewal only on FortiAP and cannot be bought with new hardware.
Part numbers are Fortinet catalogue SKUs listed for reference. Availability, term and lead time are confirmed at quote.
FortiAP HD-224KR
Ultra narrow fixed beam aimed right at 17 dBi, reaching up to 250 ft - the long-throw model.
The Long Throw
Where the 444 pair reconfigure their beams, the 224KR and KL have one fixed, very tight pattern: 15 by 17 degrees at 17 dBi, which is what carries 250 ft across a bowl to a specific block of seats. They are dual 5 GHz with no 6 GHz radio, four streams rather than sixteen, and 33 W rather than 51 W. The capacity per unit is lower; the point is reach and isolation, so that dozens of them can share the spectrum.
Why They Are Handed
The KR and KL are the same access point mirrored. In a seating bowl they are mounted in pairs under a tier, each covering the block to one side, so the pattern has to be handed. Specify them in pairs and tell us which side each position needs - send the mounting plan and we will check it against the layout before quoting.
Managed From the Firewall, Not a Controller
A FortiAP has no separate controller to buy, licence or patch. It is managed from a FortiGate, from FortiEdge Cloud or through FortiSASE, which means the wireless policy and the security policy are configured in the same place and the access point is part of the Security Fabric rather than a device bolted on beside it. For a site that already runs a FortiGate, adding wireless is adding an access point and nothing else.
