All performance figures are stated by Fortinet as maximums and vary with system configuration. Throughput, sessions and VPN figures are identical to the FortiGate 30G - the SSD and the power draw are the differences.
IPS, application control, NGFW and threat protection figures are measured with logging enabled. NGFW is firewall, IPS and application control; threat protection adds malware protection.
IPsec VPN performance is tested with AES256-SHA256. SSL inspection figures are an average across HTTPS cipher suites.
CAPWAP throughput is listed as TBA in the August 2025 datasheet and has not been published.

What the 31G Adds
The 31G is the 30G with a 30 GB SSD fitted. That storage is what lets the appliance keep logs locally rather than shipping every event off-box, which matters when the WAN is the thing you are troubleshooting, when a retention requirement has to be met on site, or when FortiAnalyzer is not part of the deployment. Throughput, session capacity, VPN figures and the port layout are identical to the 30G; the unit draws a little more and runs slightly warmer.
Converged Next-Generation Firewall and SD-WAN
The FortiGate and FortiWiFi 30G series integrate firewalling, SD-WAN and security in one appliance, making them suited to building secure networks at distributed enterprise sites and transforming WAN architecture at any scale. The series runs on FortiOS, the industry first converged networking and security operating system, so one operating system covers both the networking and the security side of the deployment.
Built on the Fortinet Security Fabric
As a cornerstone of the Fortinet Security Fabric, the FortiGate NGFW works with FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services to deliver coordinated, automated threat protection in real time. The 31G is built on the patented SD-WAN ASIC, carries a Trusted Platform Module for key storage, and is managed centrally alongside the rest of the estate from FortiManager.
